Each piece is handmade using cast and granulated glass, compacted slowly and carefully using wooden tools to follow the shape of the mould below. This leaves the front of the fans with a speckled, granulated matte surface that also shimmers in the light, inspired by the soft highlights found in a darkroom. This contrasts with the undulated polish on the back of the fan, melted to the right temperature so the compacted granules smooth over without spilling out of the mould.
I work on a commission basis once a piece has been sold. Although the work is made with a mould, the placement of granules and painted colour are done by hand, so each piece will be slightly different to the next. Due to the process, bubbles, tiny holes and texture are imperfections which are a part of the beauty of the piece.
